Established in 1958, Slough Sub-Aqua Club (SSAC) is one of the oldest clubs in the UK. We are a member of the Sub Aqua Association (SAA). Club No: 006.
The main aim of the club is simply to 'go diving' and enjoy ourselves while we do.We have a wide cross section of members from all walks of life and of all ages and welcome everyone is welcome irrespective of qualifications and experience.
Our membership includes people trained by not only the SAA but also BSAC, PADI, NAUI, TDI, IANTD and others. We have members at all levels from trainees to those involved in the more advanced aspects of technical diving.
The key to training in the club is ensuring that we have the necessary skills to enjoy our diving safely. A well-trained and alert diver can recognise potential hazards early and take appropriate action in what is an alien environment. The emphasis of all diving activities in the club is to ensure the safety of our members. Slough Sub-Aqua Club has a long and enviable record of safe diving!
The club offers a very structured approach to training up to the Elementary Diver level.
Beyond that training tends to be arranged "on demand" and frequently takes place in combination with open water dives. The club's training has been organised so that trainees can complete some open water training in a real diving environment early in their diving career. This is restricted to shallow, well-sheltered sites with suitably experienced dive partners. All training is planned to meet, if not surpass national standards, which are set by the SAA. Training is available in the pool every Friday evening from 8 p.m. until 9 p.m. Pool training can be used by trainees to learn skills, and by more advanced divers to practice techniques or simply to test equipment before use in open water.
Instruction within the club is free on request to any member at any point in his or her diving career. If training requirements should be beyond the scope of club training (for example boat handling, coastal navigation, VHF Radio, Oxygen Administration etc.) suitable courses with the SAA or other commercial organisations can be arranged. (SAA courses typically cost substantially less than equivalent commercial courses.)
Newcomers can try it for the first time in a swimming pool, provided thay have a basic medical fitness and are comfortable in the water. This will normally give you the chance to see if scuba-diving is for you. So why not give it a try...a whole new world awaits!
All members will eventually require their own diving equipment, however the club does have a selection of equipment which is available for training and early open water dives. It is recommended that new members purchase their own 'basic equipment' comprising Mask, Snorkel and Fins as soon as is practicable (typically about £60.00). The club can, in contrast to most other clubs or commercial organisations, offer a detailed information guide and independent support to trainees on buying equipment at all levels. A link to our on-line guide is available here or by clicking on the "Bitz" logo in the left hand margin.
The club offers a wide range of diving, the dive plan for the coming year is usually published during the dark cold winter months of January/February. This plan includes dives that are suitable for trainees and some that are only suitable for the more experienced; most of the dives are open to all club members. These dives may include day trips, weekends, long weekends and some longer trips both in the UK and overseas. During the last year we organised week long holidays in both Scapa Flow and the Red Sea and have further trips planned this year including a week planned in the Scilly Isles as well as weekends diving along the South Coast. The club runs many 'spontaneous' dives, when the weather is good and also provides a good source of information and dive partners to enable members to put together a diving trip at short notice.
If you would like to meet some of the club members, we relocated to the Montem Pool, Slough at the start of April 2003. Simply come along any Wednesday evening, from 8.00pm - 9.00pm and/or join us in a local pub afterwards. If you would like to pre-arrange a "try-dive" then either e-mail Ian or phone: 01628 530851.
