Which Mask?

Masks have a number of features, these include the following:

Does the silicone/rubber skirt (a), which goes next to your face, have a double seal (b & c)?
Ensure the lenses are made from tempered glass (d).
Does it look solid? In particular, how is the strap attached (e)? - Look at the associated fittings. Eg. One of the lugs on the "T" shaped mask fitting on the right broke in a few months through normal use.
Ensure it has a nose pocket (f).
Ensure that it has a good quality strap (g).
Does it have a low volume? This makes it easier to clear if it floods; improves the field of view and reduces drag.
Does it feel comfortable?

Does it fit properly - ie 'stick' to my face if I simply breathe in a little bit?
You can check that a mask fits properly by placing it on your face, without putting the strap around the back of your head. Inhale very slightly through your nose and take your hand away. If the mask fits properly, it will stay in place. If not, it will fall off. If unsure, ask for help. Virtually all dive shop attendants can help with this in their sleep.

Note: When you check the fit it may be worth placing a snorkel or regulator in your mouth and wearing your usual hood in case you are one of a minority of people whose face/skin distorts in this situation, thus affecting the seal...few people have to do this, but worth considering if it fits in the shop but not in the water!

Does it come with a protective box?
Does it provide you with a good field of view? Or does it feel too blinkered?
Do I want prescription lenses and are they available with this model?
Does the mask come with a clear silicone (a) or black rubber skirt? Clear silicone may be preferred for seeing torch signals which are off to the side, this may not be possible if it were black rubber.
Always buy masks from dive stores; those available on the High Street are grossly inferior copies.
Rub a little toothpaste on the lenses in a new mask, this will help to remove any grease from the manufacturing process and help to prevent it from steaming up.
Not everyone realises that too tight a mask strap as well as too loose a mask strap can cause a mask to leak.
The use of sun tan lotion on the face, whilst essential to protect your skin, can cause problems with obtaining a seal with the mask, so DO protect yourself but minimise the excessive use of lotions.

Recommendations

There is no specific mask that you should buy, simply due to the particulars of getting one to fit but DO look for the above features.
