Which Compass?
A compass is an essential tool for following a bearing underwater or on occasion conducting a search pattern. It can be quite common for a diver to be dropped in the water with an instruction to swim in a particular direction .
There are a number of features to look for:
Does it have a rotating bezel? Ensure it won't rotate too easily. Is it liquid filled? Is it a wrist mounted model? Models mounted as part of a contents gauge console are usually difficult to use and very bulky. Is it tolerant of not being held perfectly horizontal? Is it marked in graduations of at least 2 degrees? It may at times be helpful to hold the compass in your hand whilst following a particular bearing, it is therefore useful if it can be easily removed and replaced. The images show compasses which have had their normal straps replaced with two bungee loops, these hold them secure and also allow them to be easily removed when required.
